Case IH 19 – Armrest Controller (ARM) or Tractor Management Function (TMF) / Hitch Controller: Hitch Upper Limit potentiometer is failed in the Armrest Controller

Issue description

The Tractor Data Bus has signaled that the upper limit potentiometer has failed, or there is a software execution error. The hitch controller relies on this signal to know the maximum allowed height for the 3-point hitch.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Case IH MX Magnum series
  • Case IH STX Steiger series
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH CVX series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the connection between the secondary panel (where the hitch dials are located) and the armrest controller for damaged wires, loose connections, or bent pins.

  2. Perform a potentiometer resistance test: Disconnect connector J2 of the secondary panel from the armrest controller. Measure continuity between pin 1 and pin 2 (should be approx. 2,000 ohms). Measure between pin 2 and pin 7 while turning the dial (should change smoothly from 0.1k to 1.1k ohms).

  3. Perform a power supply test: Turn the key switch to ACC. Check the power supply coming from the armrest controller at pin 1 of J2 (should read approximately 8 volts).

Repair steps

  1. Clean and reshape pins

If the visual inspection reveals corroded or bent pins at connector J2, clean the connectors, reshape the pins, and reconnect.

  2. Replace potentiometer or panel

If the potentiometer fails the resistance sweep test (dead spots or infinite resistance), the potentiometer or the secondary hitch panel itself must be replaced.

  3. Replace armrest controller

If the power supply from the armrest controller fails the voltage test (does not supply 8 volts to pin 1), the armrest controller has failed internally and must be replaced.

  4. Reconnect harnesses

After replacing the faulty component (potentiometer, panel, or armrest controller), reconnect all harnesses.

  5. Perform calibration

Turn the key on and perform the electronic hitch and armrest controller calibration procedure via the tractor's display monitor.

  6. Verify repair

Check for fault codes. If no fault code is recorded, the repair is successful. If the code returns despite a good potentiometer, the armrest controller requires replacement.
