Case IH 1900 – VCM (Vehicle Control Module) / UCM (Universal Control Module): VCM Ground Fault
Issue description
A problem with the ground circuit supplying the module, which could be caused by a loose ground connection, a broken ground wire in the harness, or an internal failure within the module itself. When triggered, the master telltale warning lamp will illuminate Red.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- skid steer
- Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
- Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
- SR series
- SV series
- TR series
- TV series
Check the cause
Inspect the main battery negative terminal and the chassis ground straps for looseness or heavy corrosion
Trace the wiring harness leading to the VCM/UCM for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or breaks
Disconnect the VCM connector and use a multimeter to test the ground pins on the harness side for continuity to the chassis ground
Check for a voltage drop across the ground circuit while the system is powered on to ensure the ground can carry the necessary load without resistance
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the battery negative cable before servicing electrical components or welding on the machine to prevent module damage.
Clean Ground Points
If diagnostic checks reveal high resistance, unbolt the affected chassis ground connections. Clean the terminals and the frame contact point with a wire brush until bare metal is exposed, then re-secure tightly.
Repair Harness
If a broken or chafed wire is found in the VCM harness, splice and seal the wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery and use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes.
Module Replacement
If the wiring harness and external grounds test perfectly but the 1900 fault code persists, the VCM has likely suffered an internal ground failure and must be replaced.
