Case IH 19002 (DTC 2461) - ECU – DCU (Dosing Control Unit) or ECM (Engine Control Module): Battery voltage is lower than expected

Issue description

The control unit's internal measurement of the battery voltage has dropped below the acceptable lower limit (typically below 9 volts). This indicates that the module is not receiving adequate power to operate correctly.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Companion Codes: Look for other low voltage fault codes on the CAN bus (e.g., STEER 8011, ARM 8011, AUX 8011, HITCH 8011). If multiple modules are reporting low voltage, the issue is likely the battery or alternator. If 19002 is the only code, the issue is isolated to the DCU/ECM circuit.

  2. Test System Voltage: Measure the battery voltage at the terminals with the engine off (should be ~12.6V) and with the engine running (alternator output should be ~14V).

  3. Inspect Module Connections: Locate the DCU (often mounted near the DEF tank or under the cab access steps) or the ECM. Check the controller's power and ground connections for corrosion, loose pins, or moisture intrusion.

Repair steps

  1. Battery & Charging System Maintenance

    If system voltage is low, clean the battery terminals and load-test the batteries. Test the alternator regulator output. Replace the batteries or alternator if they fail testing.

  2. Harness Inspection

    If the batteries and alternator are healthy, trace the wiring harness supplying power to the DCU/ECM. Look for chafed wires, blown fuses, or damaged relays in the power distribution box.

  3. Connector Repair

    Disconnect the harness at the DCU/ECM. Clean the connector pins with electronic contact cleaner. If any pins are burnt or heavily corroded, splice in a new OEM repair connector.

  4. Module Replacement (Last Resort)

    If the wiring harness delivers proper voltage and ground under load to the module's connector, but the code persists, the DCU or ECM has suffered an internal hardware failure. Replace the module. (Note: DCU replacement requires an Electronic Service Tool and dealer passwords to flash the software and calibrate the system).

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect all components, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and run the machine to verify the code does not return.
