Case IH 19004 – DCU (Dosing Control Unit) or Engine ECU: Battery voltage sensing (electrical) - signal below low error threshold / Battery voltage evaluation - below lower limit.

Issue description

The control module is detecting a system voltage that has dropped below the minimum acceptable operating threshold (typically indicating a severely discharged battery, a failing alternator, or high resistance in the power supply wiring to the module).

Check the cause

  1. Use a multimeter to check the resting battery voltage and perform a heavy load test on the batteries to ensure they can hold a charge.

  2. Start the engine and measure the alternator output voltage at the battery terminals (should read between 13.5V and 14.2V).

  3. Inspect the main wiring harness connecting the battery to the DCU/Engine ECU for loose connections, chafed wires, or corrosion at the pins.

  4. Measure the voltage directly at the DCU power supply pins while the key switch is ON and compare this to the voltage at the battery to check for a voltage drop.

  5. Check the main power relays and fuses supplying the DCU for partial melting or corrosion.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

    Always disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing electrical components to prevent short circuits.

  2. Clean grounds and terminals

    Remove the battery terminals and main chassis ground cables. Clean them thoroughly with a wire brush to ensure bare-metal contact, then reattach and tighten to spec.

  3. Replace faulty power sources

    If the battery failed the load test (discharged battery cause), replace it. If the alternator failed the output test (failing alternator cause), remove the serpentine belt, unbolt the alternator, and install a replacement.

  4. Repair wiring

    If a voltage drop was found in the harness (high resistance cause), locate the damaged section of wire or corroded connector. Splice in new wiring using weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors, or replace the damaged harness section.

  5. Replace module (Worst Case)

    If the battery, alternator, and wiring all test perfectly (e.g., the module is receiving a full 12V+ but still internally reports low voltage), the DCU or ECU itself has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced or remanufactured.

  6. Clear codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes. Run the machine to verify the code does not return.
