19030

Case IH 19030 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Exhaust flap increased friction or high mechanical load or flap sticking

Issue description

The exhaust flap is experiencing increased friction, high mechanical load, or is sticking.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • Vestrum Series (100, 110, 120, 130)
  • Optum Series (250, 270, 300 CVX)
  • Farmall (110A, 120A, 130A, 140A)
  • Maxxum (115, 125, 135, 145)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the exhaust flap valve physically to determine if there is increased friction, carbon buildup, or a high mechanical load causing the flap to stick.

  2. Check the CAN bus communication wiring and harness connections between the vehicle controller/ECU and the exhaust flap actuator for any damage, corrosion, or disconnected lines.

  3. Verify the actuator supply voltage, as voltage out of range can also cause exhaust flap actuator failures (DTC 329C / 19027).

Repair steps

  1. Allow the engine and exhaust system to cool completely, as the exhaust flap actuator is cooled by engine coolant in some models.

Cool down the system to prevent burns and safely access the components.

  2. Locate the exhaust flap valve/actuator assembly on the exhaust aftertreatment pipe.

Identify the component on the exhaust system.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector (CAN/power harness) from the actuator.

Remove the wiring harness to isolate the actuator.

  4. Remove the actuator and manually test the exhaust flap for smooth operation.

If the flap is seized due to soot or mechanical failure, the valve assembly must be replaced.

  5. If the flap moves freely but the actuator is unresponsive or failing to send CAN messages, replace the electronic exhaust flap actuator.

Install a new actuator if the mechanical flap is fine but the electronics have failed.

  6. Reinstall the new component, reconnect the wiring harness, and clear the fault codes via the diagnostic screen.

Complete the installation and verify the repair by clearing the codes.
