Case IH 19031 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Exhaust Flap actuator: Feedback position positive deviation too high
Issue description
This code indicates a discrepancy between the commanded position of the exhaust flap and its actual physical position. The internal feedback sensor reports that the flap is out of its expected range, typically caused by mechanical binding due to soot/friction, an overheated actuator, a broken internal return spring, or a wiring/CAN network issue.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- Tier 4b
- Vestrum 100
- Vestrum 110
- Vestrum 120
- Vestrum 130
- Puma
- Magnum
Check the cause
Check the exhaust flap actuator's voltage supply and wiring harness for short circuits, undervoltage, or broken/disconnected cables
Verify the presence and correct connection of the exhaust flap actuator to the CAN network
Inspect the actuator for signs of overheating or increased mechanical resistance caused by carbon and soot buildup
Inspect the internal spring of the actuator for breakage due to extreme heat and wear
Repair steps
Cool Down
Ensure the engine and exhaust system are completely cool. The exhaust flap is located directly at the hot outlet of the turbocharger.
Drain Coolant
Drain the engine coolant or pinch off the specific coolant lines routing to the actuator, as it is cooled by engine coolant.
Disconnect Electricals
Unplug the electrical harness and CAN network connectors from the actuator.
Remove the Valve
Unbolt the exhaust brake valve assembly from the exhaust plumbing post-turbocharger.
Inspect / Repair
If the internal servomotor spring is broken, install an aftermarket stainless steel replacement spring kit to restore function. If the valve is heavily coked with unremovable soot or the electronic motor has failed, replace the entire unit.
Reinstallation
Install the new exhaust flap actuator. Reconnect the coolant lines and refill/bleed the engine coolant system.
Finalize
Reconnect the electrical harness, turn on the machine, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the ECU fault codes and perform a power-up test to ensure the flap moves freely without sticking.
