Case IH 19032 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Exhaust Flap actuator: Feedback position negative deviation too high
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) is commanding the exhaust flap to close to a specific angle, but the position sensor inside the actuator is reporting that the flap is physically stuck at a lower (more open) angle. This is typically caused by heavy soot or carbon buildup, a failing internal servomotor, or high resistance/voltage drop in the actuator wiring harness.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Tier 4b
- Vestrum 100
- Vestrum 110
- Vestrum 120
- Vestrum 130
Check the cause
Verify the presence and correct connection of the Exhaust Flap Actuator to the CAN network.
Check for undervoltage, short circuits, or broken cables in the voltage supply harness.
Disconnect the actuator linkage or remove the assembly and manually actuate the exhaust flap by hand to check for heavy carbon binding.
Check the actuator for internal shorting or increased resistance, indicating a failed servomotor.
Repair steps
Preparation
Ensure the engine and exhaust system are completely cool. Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent accidental shorting of the CAN bus lines.
Access the Valve
Locate the exhaust flap actuator assembly, which is mounted inline on the exhaust pipe downstream of the turbocharger.
Disconnect Lines
Carefully clamp and disconnect the engine coolant lines routed to the actuator to prevent excessive fluid loss. Disconnect the electrical harness connector.
Remove the Actuator
Remove the retaining bolts or V-band clamps securing the exhaust brake valve assembly to the exhaust pipe.
Clean or Replace
If the valve was mechanically bound by soot, clean the housing thoroughly with a DPF/EGR carbon solvent. If the electronic actuator motor has failed, the unit must be replaced.
Reinstallation
Install the new exhaust flap actuator using new exhaust gaskets/seals. Reconnect the coolant lines and electrical harness.
Calibration
Reconnect the battery. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes and perform an actuator sweep test/calibration to allow the ECM to learn the new actuator's end-stops. Top off the engine coolant.
