Case IH 19033 (DTC 469C) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Exhaust flap stuck during power up test.

Issue description

Modern Tier 4B (Final) and Stage V engines utilize an electronic exhaust flap to restrict exhaust flow and increase exhaust gas temperatures in cold conditions. When the key is turned ON, an automated sweep/power-up test verifies the flap's range of motion. If the flap fails to move or reach its commanded position due to mechanical binding from soot/carbon buildup or a failed actuator motor, this fault code is triggered.

Check the cause

  1. Visual & Mechanical Inspection: Check for heavy soot and carbon buildup physically jamming the butterfly valve inside the exhaust pipe.

  2. Actuator Sweep Test: Turn the key ON (without starting the engine) and listen to the exhaust flap actuator. Humming or clicking without movement indicates a mechanical jam; no sound indicates a dead actuator motor or wiring.

  3. Wiring and Harness Check: Inspect the electrical connector and wiring harness going to the exhaust flap actuator for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

  4. Coolant Line Inspection: On certain engines (such as the FPT NEF 4-cylinder), check for any coolant leaks around the actuator housing that may have shorted the electronics.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate assembly

    Locate the exhaust flap assembly, typically positioned in the exhaust piping between the turbocharger and the DOC/SCR canister.

  3. Disconnect wiring

    Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the exhaust flap actuator.

  4. Disconnect coolant lines

    (If applicable to your engine model) Pinch off and disconnect the engine coolant lines running to the actuator to prevent fluid loss and contamination.

  5. Remove hardware

    Remove the exhaust clamps or retaining bolts securing the exhaust flap to the exhaust front pipe and turbocharger.

  6. Remove assembly

    Remove the exhaust flap assembly from the machine.

  7. Inspect and clean or replace

    Inspect the internal flap. If it is heavily caked with soot but the motor is still functional, you can attempt to clean the housing and valve with a heavy-duty carbon/EGR cleaner to free the mechanism. If the actuator motor has burned out from fighting the jammed flap, the entire assembly must be replaced.

  8. Install assembly

    Install the new (or cleaned) exhaust flap assembly using new exhaust gaskets and clamps to prevent exhaust leaks.

  9. Reconnect components

    Reconnect the exhaust pipes, coolant lines (if applicable), and the electrical connector.

  10. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery ground cable.

  11. Clear code and test

    Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault code and run an active actuator test to verify the flap sweeps smoothly without binding.
