Case IH 19033 (F-518695-14) - ECU – Engine ECU: Exhaust flap stuck during power up test
Issue description
During the machine's key-on power-up sequence, the system commands the exhaust flap to sweep its full range of motion to verify functionality. If the flap binds, fails to move, or cannot reach its target positions, the system logs this fault code.

Check the cause
Check for related codes (e.g., 19034 or 19035) that point to electrical or communication failures rather than a mechanical bind
Turn the key to the ON position (engine off) and listen near the exhaust for the actuator attempting to sweep
Inspect the actuator's stainless steel return spring for breakage caused by extreme heat and wear
Check the butterfly valve inside the exhaust pipe for heavy soot and carbon buildup that can physically jam the flap
Inspect the electrical connector at the actuator for melted pins, corrosion, or wire chafing
Repair steps
Cool down machine
Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the exhaust system and engine coolant to cool completely.
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate exhaust flap assembly
Locate the exhaust flap assembly, which is typically mounted inline between the turbocharger and the DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst).
Disconnect electrical connector
Disconnect the electrical connector from the exhaust flap actuator.
Disconnect coolant lines
Clamp off the engine coolant supply and return lines routed to the actuator to prevent excessive fluid loss, then disconnect the lines from the actuator.
Remove support bracket bolts
Remove the upper retaining bolts securing the exhaust flap support bracket.
Remove V-band clamp
Loosen and remove the V-band clamp securing the exhaust flap assembly to the turbocharger/exhaust front pipe.
Remove exhaust flap assembly
Remove the exhaust flap assembly from the machine.
Inspect and clean or replace
Inspect the internal flap. If it is heavily carboned but mechanically sound, cleaning it with EGR/carbon solvent may unstick it. If the actuator motor is burnt out or the internal spring is broken, the assembly must be replaced.
Position new/cleaned assembly
Position the new/cleaned exhaust flap assembly against the turbocharger and loosely install the V-band clamp.
Install support bracket bolts
Install the support bracket bolts and torque them to 37 - 49 N·m (27.3 - 36.1 lb ft).
Tighten V-band clamp
Tighten the exhaust V-band clamp securely.
Reconnect coolant lines
Reconnect the coolant supply and return lines, then remove the hose clamps.
Reconnect electrical connector
Reconnect the electrical connector.
Top off engine coolant
Top off the engine coolant to replace any lost fluid and bleed the cooling system.
Test and clear codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to ON to allow the ECU to perform the power-up test, and clear the fault codes.
