Case IH 19034 (F-518698-31) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Exhaust flap actuator is over temperature
Issue description
The exhaust flap actuator (often functioning as an engine exhaust brake valve or thermal management valve for the SCR system) has exceeded its safe operating temperature threshold. Because this actuator is typically cooled by engine coolant, an over-temperature event usually points to a cooling failure at the component level rather than a purely electrical fault.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- Case IH Vestrum Series (100, 110, 120, 130)
- Case IH Farmall Series (e.g., 40-45-50, 95U, 105U, 115U)
Check the cause
Check the tractor's overall engine coolant level.
Inspect the specific coolant hoses routed to the exhaust flap actuator for kinks, blockages, or leaks that would restrict coolant flow and cause overheating.
Look for accompanying codes that might indicate a larger failure, such as 19035 (CAN timeout error from exhaust flap actuator) or 19033 (Exhaust flap stuck during power up test).
Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the actuator for melted wires or heat damage caused by the over-temperature condition.
Repair steps
Cool Down
Allow the engine and exhaust system to cool completely to avoid severe burns.
Drain Coolant
Partially drain the engine coolant to a level below the exhaust flap actuator to prevent spills.
Disconnect Electricals
Unplug the CAN/power electrical harness connector from the actuator.
Remove Coolant Lines
Disconnect the coolant inlet and outlet hoses from the actuator housing.
Dismount the Actuator
Unbolt the exhaust flap actuator (exhaust brake valve) from the exhaust pipe/manifold assembly and remove it.
Install New Part
Mount the replacement actuator and tighten the exhaust flange bolts to OEM torque specifications.
Reconnect Systems
Reattach the coolant lines and plug in the electrical connector.
Refill and Bleed
Refill the engine coolant to the proper level and bleed the cooling system of any air pockets (air pockets can cause the new actuator to overheat again).
Clear Codes
Use a diagnostic tool (such as the Case IH EST or Jaltest) to clear the 19034 fault code and run an active test on the exhaust flap to ensure it cycles properly.
