Case IH 19034 – Engine ECU: Exhaust flap actuator is over temperature

The electronic actuator responsible for controlling the exhaust flap (often utilized for the exhaust brake or thermal management of the aftertreatment system) has exceeded its safe operating temperature threshold.

   Check for Secondary Codes: Look for DTC 19035 (CAN timeout). If present, the actuator's internal electronics may have already failed or melted due to the heat.

   Inspect the Cooling System: Inspect the coolant lines routed to the actuator for kinks, blockages, or leaks, and verify the engine coolant level is adequate, as a lack of coolant flow is a primary cause.

   Run an Active Test: Connect the diagnostic tool, navigate to the 'ENGINE TEST' menu, and select 'FLAP VALVE TEST' to determine if the actuator is mechanically seized or electrically dead.

   Cool Down

   Allow the engine and exhaust system to cool completely to avoid severe burns and to safely handle the coolant lines.

   Resolve Coolant Flow Issues

   If the diagnostic checks revealed blocked or damaged coolant lines feeding the actuator, replace the lines and bleed the cooling system.

   Remove the Actuator

   If the actuator failed the 'FLAP VALVE TEST' or has a persistent CAN timeout, it must be replaced. Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the exhaust flap actuator.

   Disconnect Coolant Lines

   Clamp off and disconnect the engine coolant lines attached to the actuator.

   Unbolt

   Remove the mounting hardware securing the actuator to the exhaust brake valve assembly.

   Install New Part

   Mount the new actuator, reconnect the coolant lines, and plug in the electrical connector.

   Refill and Test

   Top off the engine coolant if any was lost during the swap. Clear the fault codes and re-run the 'FLAP VALVE TEST' via the diagnostic tool to verify the repair.
