Case IH 19035 – Vehicle Controller / Engine Control Unit (ECU): CAN timeout error from exhaust flap actuator

Issue description

Controller Area Network (CAN) communication failure where the system is no longer receiving expected data messages from the exhaust flap actuator within the required timeframe.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • 5088 Combine
  • 6088 Combine
  • 6130 Combine
  • 6140 Combine
  • 7230 Combine
  • 8010 Combine
  • 8120 Combine
  • 8230 Combine
  • Stage V MR Tractors
  • Farmall
  • Maxxum

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the exhaust flap actuator for chafing, melting (due to exhaust heat), or rodent damage.

  2. Disconnect the exhaust flap actuator connector and check for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion.

  3. Verify that the actuator is receiving proper operating voltage and has a solid ground connection.

  4. Using a multimeter or oscilloscope, check the CAN High (2.5V to 2.7V) and CAN Low (2.3V to 2.5V) lines at the actuator connector for proper voltage and ensure there are no open or short circuits in the CAN wiring back to the ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Wiring Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed broken wires or corroded connector pins, repair the wiring harness or replace the pigtail connector.

  3. Actuator Replacement

If the CAN lines, power, and ground are intact but the timeout error persists, the internal module of the exhaust flap actuator has failed. Locate the exhaust flap actuator on the exhaust/emissions piping, remove the retaining hardware and disconnect the mechanical linkage (if applicable), and install the new exhaust flap actuator/control valve.

  4. Reassembly and Calibration

Reconnect the wiring harness and the battery.

  5. Clear Codes

Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the Case IH EST) to clear the 19035 fault code and perform any necessary relearn/calibration procedures for the new actuator. Run the engine to verify the code does not return.
