Case IH 19045 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Timeout Error of Message from ECM to NOx downstream Sensor

This is a CAN (Controller Area Network) communication error indicating that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has lost communication with the downstream Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) sensor, or the expected data message from the sensor's internal module has timed out.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the ECM and the downstream NOx sensor for chafed wires, melted insulation, or loose/corroded pins.

   Verify that the downstream NOx sensor is receiving proper supply voltage and has a clean ground connection.

   Check the CAN High and CAN Low lines for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to power.

   Inspect the NOx sensor module and probe for severe physical damage or water intrusion.

   Prepare machine

   Turn off the machine, ensure the exhaust system has cooled down, and disconnect the battery.

   Locate sensor

   Locate the downstream NOx sensor (mounted on the exhaust pipe, downstream of the SCR catalyst).

   Disconnect sensor

   Disconnect the electrical connector of the NOx sensor.

   Remove sensor

   Remove the faulty NOx sensor from the exhaust pipe (penetrating oil and a specialized NOx sensor socket may be required).

   Install new sensor

   Install the new NOx downstream sensor and tighten to the OEM specified torque.

   Reconnect components

   Reconnect the electrical connector and reconnect the battery.

   Reset ECU data

   Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) diagnostic laptop. Navigate to the engine configuration menu. You must select 'Replacement of the Nox Downstream Sensor – Reset ECU Data' and click the 'RESET' button. If this ECU reset is not performed, the ECM will not properly recognize the new sensor and the system may remain in derate.

   Verify repair

   Clear the fault codes and run the engine to verify the code does not return.
