19052

Case IH 19052 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Upstream NOx sensor internal failure (Heater Short Circuit Error)

Issue description

The upstream NOx sensor relies on an internal heating element to quickly reach operating temperature. Fault code 19052 indicates that the system has detected a short circuit specifically within this internal heater circuit, preventing the sensor from reaching the correct temperature and rendering its emissions data unreliable.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the upstream NOx sensor (before the DOC) and trace its wiring back to the 5-cavity female wire connector. Look for melted wires, chafing against the exhaust, or water intrusion in the connector.

  2. Circuit Testing: Disconnect the sensor and check the machine-side harness for a short to ground or a short to power on the heater circuit pins.

  3. Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for other CAN timeout codes (e.g., 19060) or open circuit codes (e.g., 19054). If multiple sensor codes are present, the issue is likely a damaged harness. If 19052 is isolated and the harness tests fine, the sensor's internal heater has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Turn off the engine, disconnect the battery, and allow the exhaust system to cool completely to avoid severe burns.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Find the upstream NOx sensor mounted in the exhaust pipe just before the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the 5-pin electrical connector linking the sensor to the engine harness.

  4. Remove the Sensor

Using a specialized NOx/O2 sensor socket or a wrench, carefully unscrew the sensor from the exhaust pipe. (If seized, apply penetrating oil and allow it to soak).

  5. Prepare the New Sensor

Ensure the threads of the new sensor have anti-seize compound applied. Caution: Do not get any anti-seize on the sensor probe tip, as this will contaminate it.

  6. Install the New Sensor

Thread the new sensor into the exhaust pipe and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  7. Reconnect

Plug the 5-pin connector back into the machine's harness and reconnect the battery.

  8. Clear Codes

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic port to clear the 19052 fault code from the ECU. Run the engine to operating temperature to ensure the code does not return.
