Case IH 19053 (DTC A66E) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Upstream NOx sensor internal failure (Heater Performance Plausibility Error)
Issue description
Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) sensors contain an internal heating element that brings the sensor up to its required operating temperature quickly so it can accurately measure emissions. This fault code triggers when the control module detects that the upstream sensor's heater is not performing as expected (e.g., drawing incorrect current, failing to heat up, or degraded), meaning the sensor cannot provide reliable NOx readings.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying codes (such as 19054 or 19059). If present, the issue is highly likely in the wiring harness rather than the sensor itself.
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the upstream NOx sensor for chafing, melted wires, or physical damage.
Disconnect the NOx sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.
Use a multimeter to verify the sensor is receiving proper voltage (typically 12V) and has a solid ground.
If wiring, power, and ground are intact, conclude the internal heater has failed and the sensor requires replacement.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts. Allow the exhaust system to cool completely, as the NOx sensor is threaded directly into the hot exhaust pipe.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the upstream NOx sensor. It will be threaded into the exhaust piping before the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalyst / DPF assembly.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector linking the NOx sensor to the main engine harness.
Removal
Using a specialized NOx/O2 sensor socket or a wrench (typically 22mm), carefully unscrew the sensor from the exhaust pipe. Note: If the sensor is seized, apply penetrating oil to the threads and allow it to soak to prevent stripping the exhaust bung.
Preparation for Install
Check the threads of the new OEM NOx sensor. If it does not have anti-seize compound pre-applied from the factory, apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize to the threads (avoid getting any on the sensor probe itself).
Installation
Thread the new sensor into the exhaust bung by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Reconnect
Plug the new sensor's electrical connector back into the machine's wiring harness. Ensure the locking tab clicks into place.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic scan tool (such as the Case IH EST) to clear the inactive 19053 / A66E fault code.
Validation
Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature to verify the code does not return.
