Case IH 19061 (F-3224-02) – Engine Management System (EMS) or Aftertreatment Control Module (ACM): Upstream NOx sensor lambda signal deviation - NOx sensor possible removal detected.

Issue description

The engine's aftertreatment system is reading an oxygen/fuel ratio (lambda) from the upstream NOx sensor that is so far out of the expected operational range that the system suspects the sensor has been physically removed from the exhaust stream, tampered with, or has suffered a catastrophic internal failure.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the upstream NOx sensor (located in the exhaust pipe before the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst / DOC) to ensure it is physically installed, tight, and has not backed out of the exhaust bung.

  2. Inspect the exhaust piping upstream of the sensor. A severe exhaust leak can introduce unmetered ambient air into the exhaust stream, causing a false 'removal detected' lambda reading.

  3. Check the sensor's wiring harness and the 5-pin connector (often designated as C186) for chafing, melting, or corrosion.

  4. Check for accompanying codes such as 19062 (values not plausible) or 19063 (supply voltage out of range), which indicate a wiring short or voltage issue rather than a sensor failure.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the machine, allow the exhaust system to cool completely, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Removal

    Locate the upstream NOx sensor before the DOC. Disconnect the 5-pin electrical connector from the main harness. Use a specialized NOx/O2 sensor socket to carefully unscrew the sensor from the exhaust pipe.

  3. Installation

    Apply a small amount of high-temp anti-seize to the threads of the new sensor (if not pre-applied), ensuring no compound touches the sensor tip. Thread the new sensor into the exhaust bung and tighten to the OEM torque specification.

  4. Reconnection

    Reconnect the 5-pin electrical connector and secure the wiring harness away from extreme heat sources. Reconnect the battery.

  5. ECU Reset

    You must use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Navigate to the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) electrical system menu, select Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) sensor - Configure, and execute the "Replacement of the Nox Upstream Sensor – Reset ECU Data" command. This clears the old learned values and extinguishes the code.
