Case IH 19063 (F-3216-31) – Engine ECU: Upstream NOx sensor supply voltage is out of range

Issue description

This fault indicates an electrical issue where the supply voltage being sent to the upstream Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) sensor—located in the exhaust system before the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst—is outside the expected operating parameters. This prevents the sensor from accurately measuring the NOx content of the exhaust gases, which is required for the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) dosing system to function properly.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and the 5-pin connector leading to the upstream NOx sensor for corrosion, damaged pins, open circuits, or shorts to ground/battery.

  2. Verify the actual supply voltage reaching the sensor connector from the Engine ECU to confirm if the voltage is genuinely out of range or if the sensor's internal circuitry has failed.

  3. Verify DEF fluid quality, DEF injector operation, and DEF pump pressure to rule out basic DEF supply issues that can trigger cascading codes.

  4. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the SCR upstream temperature sensor to ensure the exhaust system is reaching proper operating temperatures.

Repair steps

  1. Replace the Sensor

    Remove the faulty upstream NOx sensor from the exhaust pipe and install the new sensor. (Note: Sensors are typically threaded M20 x 1.5).

  2. Reset ECU Data

    Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to reset the learned values. Navigate to the SCR electrical system menu, select 'Replacement of the Nox Upstream Sensor – Reset ECU Data', click the 'CONFIGURE SELECTED ITEM' button, and click the 'RESET' button.

  3. Clear Codes

    Clear the inactive 19063 fault code from the Engine ECU.

  4. Validation Run

    Run the machine under load (using a dynamometer, hydraulic flow meter, or field operation) until the SCR upstream temperature sensor reads 300 - 330 °C (572 - 626 °F). Maintain this temperature for approximately 30 minutes to verify the repair and ensure the SCR system is dosing correctly.
