Case IH 19081 (DTC 717A) - ECU – Engine ECU: DEF/AdBlue dosing valve actuator short circuit to ground in high side failure
Issue description
The system has detected a short to ground at the energy stage on the high side of the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) dosing valve actuator circuit. This can occur during dosing and may be associated with excessive effort for dosing.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
- Magnum (180 through 380)
- Maxxum (115 through 150)
- Optum (270, 300)
- Puma (140 through 240)
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the DEF dosing valve for chafed wires, cuts, or areas where the high-side power wire might be rubbing against the chassis, causing a short to ground.
Disconnect the DEF dosing valve and check the connector for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins, which can bridge circuits and cause a short.
Test the DEF dosing valve actuator itself with a multimeter to see if the internal solenoid/actuator is shorted to its own casing (ground).
Check the DEF dosing lines for crystallized DEF fluid and verify that the DEF filter is not severely blocked.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a chafed wire shorting to the frame, repair the damaged section of the harness and secure it away from vibration points.
Replace the Dosing Valve
If the wiring is intact but the valve is internally shorted, remove the DEF dosing valve (injector) from the exhaust stream and install a new unit.
Replace the DEF Filter
It is highly recommended to replace the DEF filter during this service to ensure no blockages are causing excessive pump/dosing effort.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery. Use a dealer-level diagnostic tool (or equivalent) to clear the 19081 / 717A fault code.
Run a Self-Test
Initiate a DEF/DPF self-test or dosing test via the diagnostic tool to verify the system builds pressure and doses correctly without logging the code again.
