Case IH 19085 – Engine ECU or DEF/AdBlue Dosing Control Unit (DCU): DEF/AdBlue dosing valve ECU driver overtemperature failure
Issue description
This code indicates that the internal driver circuit within the control module responsible for operating the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) dosing valve has exceeded its maximum safe operating temperature. This is typically caused by excessive current draw (such as a short circuit in the wiring or the valve itself) or extreme ambient heat preventing the ECU from cooling properly.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU/DCU and the DEF dosing valve. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines that could cause a short to ground or short to battery, which would force the ECU driver to pull excessive current and overheat.
Disconnect the DEF dosing valve and the ECU connectors. Check for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins.
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the DEF dosing valve. An internal short in the valve's solenoid will cause high current draw, overheating the ECU driver. Compare the reading to the OEM specification.
Ensure the ECU is not covered in excessive debris, mud, or chaff that would insulate it and prevent normal heat dissipation.
Look for accompanying codes such as 19081 (DEF dosing valve actuator short circuit to ground) or 19086 (DEF pressure line heater failure) which can help pinpoint a broader harness issue.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent any further damage to the ECU or electrical system.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wiring or replace the DEF dosing harness overlay.
Replace the DEF Dosing Valve
If the dosing valve failed the resistance test, remove the V-band clamp or mounting bolts securing the doser to the exhaust SCR tube. Remove the DEF lines (be prepared for minor fluid leakage) and electrical connector. Install the new dosing valve and torque the clamp/bolts to spec.
ECU Assessment
If the wiring and dosing valve test perfectly fine, the ECU driver itself may have suffered permanent internal thermal damage. In this case, the ECU/DCU will need to be replaced and flashed with the correct machine software by a dealer.
System Prime and Test
Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool (like the Case IH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the fault codes. Run a "DEF Doser Override" or "System Leak Test" to command the valve to open and verify that the driver no longer overheats and the code does not return.
