Case IH 19090 – Dosing Control Unit (DCU): Error DEF/AdBlue supply module heater temperature sensor cold start plausibility
Issue description
This code indicates a logic error (plausibility fault) detected during a 'cold start.' When a machine has been sitting idle long enough for the engine to completely cool down, the DEF temperature sensor, ambient air temperature sensor, and engine coolant temperature sensor should all read approximately the same ambient temperature. If the DEF supply module heater temperature sensor reports a temperature that is significantly different from the other sensors during this cold state, the system flags the reading as 'implausible' and triggers code 19090.

Check the cause
Compare temperature sensors: Connect a diagnostic scan tool after the machine has sat overnight (completely cold). Compare the live data for the DEF temperature, ambient air temperature, and engine coolant temperature. They should all be within a few degrees of each other. If the DEF temp is skewed, the sensor is likely faulty.
Inspect the Coolant Control Valve (CCV): Check if the CCV is stuck open or leaking. If stuck open, hot engine coolant will continuously circulate through the DEF tank/module even when not commanded, overheating the DEF and causing plausibility errors on startup.
Inspect wiring and connectors: Check the wiring harness and connectors at the DEF supply module for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins. A high-resistance connection can skew the temperature reading.
Perform a resistance test: Check the DEF tank temperature sensor pins using a multimeter to confirm if the internal thermistor is open or shorted.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Address the CCV (If Applicable)
If your diagnostics pointed to a stuck Coolant Control Valve, pinch off the coolant lines, replace the CCV, and top off the engine coolant.
Access the DEF Module
Locate the DEF supply module / header assembly, which is mounted on the top or side of the DEF tank.
Disconnect Lines
Carefully disconnect the electrical harness connectors. Disconnect the DEF fluid lines and the coolant heating lines. Tip: Have a clean catch pan ready, as some DEF and coolant will spill.
Remove the Module
Unscrew the mounting bolts or the retaining lock-ring holding the DEF header/supply module to the tank. Carefully pull the unit out, taking care not to drop dirt into the DEF tank.
Install the New Part
Insert the new DEF supply module/sensor assembly into the tank. Ensure the rubber gasket/O-ring is properly seated to prevent leaks. Tighten the retaining ring or bolts to OEM torque specs.
Reconnect
Reattach the DEF lines, coolant lines, and electrical connectors. Ensure the hoses are routed correctly (if coolant hoses are reversed, the valve can be damaged and overheat the tank).
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and use your diagnostic tool to clear the 19090 fault code.
Test Run
Start the engine and monitor the DEF temperature via the diagnostic tool to ensure it rises logically as the system operates.
