Case IH 19099 – Dosing Control Unit (DCU): Over Temperature error of DEF/AdBlue Supply Module Heater Actuator powerstage

Issue description

The internal driver (powerstage) inside the control module that supplies electrical current to the DEF Supply Module Heater has detected an over-temperature condition. This is typically caused by excessive current draw, which usually points to a short circuit in the wiring harness, a shorted internal heater element within the DEF Supply Module, or an internal failure of the control unit itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the Dosing Control Unit (DCU) to the DEF Supply Module. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to ground or short to battery.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the electrical connector at the DEF Supply Module. Check for water ingress, DEF fluid intrusion (which is highly corrosive and conductive), or bent/burnt pins.

  3. Resistance Testing (Component Side): Using a multimeter, measure the resistance of the heater circuit directly on the DEF Supply Module pins. If the resistance is significantly lower than OEM specifications (indicating a dead short), the heater element inside the module has failed.

  4. Harness Testing (ECU Side): With the module disconnected, check the harness for continuity to ground. If the harness is shorted to ground, the wiring must be repaired.

  5. DCU Verification: If the wiring harness and the DEF Supply Module heater resistance both test perfectly fine, the powerstage driver inside the DCU has likely failed internally, meaning the DCU itself will require replacement.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent any further electrical damage or accidental DEF dosing.

  2. Locate module

    Locate the DEF Supply Module (usually mounted near or directly on the DEF tank assembly).

  3. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the module to prevent dirt from entering the DEF lines.

  4. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the module.

  5. Disconnect lines

    Carefully disconnect the DEF suction, backflow, and pressure lines. Have a clean catch pan ready, as some DEF fluid will spill. Cap the lines immediately to prevent contamination.

  6. Remove module

    Unbolt the DEF Supply Module from its mounting bracket and remove it.

  7. Install new module

    Install the new DEF Supply Module and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  8. Reconnect lines

    Reconnect the DEF fluid lines, ensuring they click securely into place.

  9. Reconnect harness

    Apply dielectric grease (if permitted by OEM) to the electrical connector and plug it in.

  10. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  11. Clear codes and test

    Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool - EST) to clear the fault codes. Run a DEF system prime/dosing test and a heater test to verify the system operates without logging the 19099 code.

  12. Program new DCU

    If the diagnosis points to a failed Dosing Control Unit (DCU), the new DCU will require software installation and parameter programming via the CNH EST tool before the machine will operate correctly.
