Case IH 19111 – Engine Control Module (ECM): DEF/AdBlue supply module pump motor short circuit to ground failure
Issue description
The electrical circuit providing power to the pump motor inside the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) supply module has shorted to ground. When this occurs, the pump cannot operate to pressurize and deliver DEF to the dosing valve, which will eventually lead to an SCR inducement (engine derate).
Applies to these machines
16 machines- Tier 4b
- 240 Series Axial-Flow (7240, 8240, 9240)
- 5130
- 6130
- 7130
- 7230
- 8230
- 9230
- Farmall (e.g., 115U)
- Magnum (180 through 370)
- Maxxum (110 through 140)
- Puma (130 through 215)
- Steiger (350 through 600)
- Patriot 4430
- Titan series
- Farmlift series
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the ECM to the DEF supply module for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or bare spots that could be grounding out against the machine's chassis.
Disconnect the electrical connector at the DEF supply module and use a multimeter to check the pump motor power supply pins on the harness side for continuity to ground. If a short is present, repair the wiring. If the harness tests fine, the internal motor circuit of the pump is shorted.
Check for severe DEF crystallization in the dosing lines or around the pump, which can cause the pump motor to overwork, overheat, and eventually fail electrically.
Verify that the DEF filter is not completely blocked, which can also strain the pump motor.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Module
Locate the DEF supply module (depending on the machine's architecture, it will either be mounted directly to the DEF tank flange or mounted remotely on the frame rail).
Disconnect Lines
Thoroughly clean the area around the module to prevent dirt or crystallized DEF from entering the open system. Disconnect the electrical harness connector and the DEF fluid lines (supply and return). Note: Have a catch pan ready for spilled DEF.
Remove the Module
Unbolt the mounting hardware and remove the faulty DEF supply module.
Install the New Module
Mount the replacement DEF supply module and secure the hardware. Reconnect the DEF fluid lines and the electrical connector.
Replace the Filter
It is highly recommended to replace the DEF filter during this service.
Programming
Reconnect the battery. Crucial Step: The new DEF supply module must be programmed/calibrated to the vehicle's ECM using a diagnostic scanner (such as the Case IH EST or Jaltest diagnostic tool).
Clear and Test
Clear the 19111 fault code and run the engine to operating temperature to verify the SCR system is dosing correctly and the code does not return.
