Case IH 19132 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Dosing Control Unit (DCU): Bad Quality of DEF/AdBlue detected

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) in the tank does not meet the required concentration standards (typically 32.5% urea) or that the DEF quality sensor has detected contamination (such as water or diesel fuel) in the DEF tank.

Check the cause

  1. Test the DEF Fluid: Use a DEF refractometer to test the fluid currently in the tank. It should read exactly 32.5% urea concentration.

  2. Check for Contamination: Visually inspect the DEF fluid for cloudiness, discoloration, or a distinct diesel fuel smell.

  3. Inspect the Wiring: Check the wiring harness and connector at the DEF Quality Sensor (usually integrated into the DEF tank header unit) for corrosion, chafing, or loose pins.

  4. Check for CAN Communication Codes: Ensure there are no active CAN timeout codes (such as 19144) which would indicate a wiring or module communication failure rather than bad fluid.

Repair steps

  1. Drain contaminated fluid

    Scenario A: The DEF fluid is degraded or contaminated. Place a suitable drain pan under the DEF tank and completely drain the contaminated fluid.

  2. Flush DEF tank

    Flush the DEF tank thoroughly using distilled water or fresh DEF to remove any residual contaminants.

  3. Replace DEF supply module filter

    Replace the DEF supply module filter if heavy contamination (like dirt or diesel) is found.

  4. Refill DEF tank

    Refill the tank with fresh, high-quality DEF that meets the ISO 22241 standard.

  5. Clear codes and test

    Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes and run an SCR system dosing test to verify the repair.

  6. Disconnect battery

    Scenario B: The DEF fluid is good, but the sensor has failed. Disconnect the battery to ensure safety before working on the electrical system.

  7. Disconnect harness and lines

    Disconnect the electrical harness and the DEF supply/return lines from the top of the DEF tank header unit.

  8. Unscrew sensor

    Unscrew the locking ring or mounting bolts securing the DEF Quality/Level Sensor to the tank.

  9. Remove old sensor

    Carefully pull the old sensor unit out of the tank.

  10. Install new sensor

    Install the new DEF Quality Sensor unit, ensuring the O-ring/gasket is properly seated to prevent leaks.

  11. Reconnect lines and harness

    Reconnect the DEF lines and the electrical harness.

  12. Reconnect battery and test

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes via the diagnostic tool, and run the machine to ensure the code does not return.
