Case IH 19136 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Short circuit to ground error on the output powerstage for MIL lamp
Issue description
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is the emissions/check engine light on the dashboard. The engine computer uses an internal "powerstage" (a solid-state driver/relay) to send voltage to illuminate this lamp. This code triggers when the controller detects that the electrical circuit controlling the MIL is shorted directly to a ground source. This prevents the lamp from functioning correctly and can potentially damage the controller's internal driver if left unresolved.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Check the wiring harness running from the ECM to the cab bulkhead, and from the bulkhead to the instrument cluster/A-pillar display. Look for chafed wire insulation, pinch points, or melted loom.
Connector Check: Inspect the ECM connectors and the instrument cluster connectors for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging the MIL pin to a ground pin.
Circuit Isolation (Multimeter Test): Disconnect the harness at the ECM and at the instrument cluster. Measure the resistance between the MIL control wire and a known good chassis ground. If there is continuity (low resistance), the short is in the wiring harness. If the circuit is open (infinite resistance), the short is likely internal to the instrument cluster or the bulb socket.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition switch and disconnect the negative battery cable to protect the ECM.
Isolate the Harness
Disconnect the main engine-to-cab wiring harness at the ECM and at the back of the instrument cluster/display.
Test the Harness
Using a digital multimeter, probe the MIL control pin on the harness connector. If it shows continuity to ground, trace the harness along the chassis. Pay special attention to areas where the harness routes near sharp metal frame edges, the firewall/bulkhead, or hot exhaust components.
Repair the Wiring
Once the chafed or pinched wire is located, cut out the damaged section. Splice in a new section of wire using weather-resistant, heat-shrink butt connectors. Wrap the repaired section in protective conduit or loom.
Test the Cluster (If Harness is Good)
If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine, the short to ground is likely inside the instrument cluster. Check the MIL bulb socket for melted plastic or a collapsed filament bridging the contacts. Replace the bulb if applicable. If the cluster has an integrated LED board that is internally shorted, the cluster must be replaced.
Reassembly & Verification
Reconnect all harness connectors and the battery. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop, clear the inactive fault codes, and cycle the key. Verify that the MIL lamp illuminates briefly during the key-on bulb check and that code 19136 does not return.
