Case IH 19138 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC) or Body Controller (BC): Open load error on the output powerstage for MIL lamp

Issue description

This code indicates an open circuit condition on the circuit responsible for powering the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). The control module is attempting to send voltage to illuminate the MIL lamp (usually for emissions or engine faults) but detects zero electrical load. This typically means the bulb is blown, a wire is broken, or a connector is unplugged between the controller and the dashboard.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a key-on bulb check by turning the ignition to ON without starting the engine to see if the MIL lamp illuminates temporarily.

  2. If the cluster uses replaceable bulbs, remove the cluster and check the MIL bulb for a broken filament.

  3. Use a multimeter to check for continuity on the wiring harness between the ECM/Body Controller output pin and the instrument cluster connector.

  4. Ensure the instrument cluster has a solid ground connection, as a floating ground can trigger open load faults.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during dashboard disassembly.

  2. Access the Cluster

    Remove the necessary trim panels to access and remove the instrument cluster from the dashboard.

  3. Inspect/Replace the Bulb

    Locate the MIL lamp on the back of the cluster. If it is a standard removable bulb, replace it with a known good bulb. (Note: If the cluster uses soldered LEDs, the entire cluster or circuit board may require professional repair or replacement).

  4. Inspect Connectors

    Check the wiring harness plugs at the back of the instrument cluster and at the ECM. Look for backed-out pins, corrosion, or broken wires right at the connector shell.

  5. Repair Wiring

    If the bulb is intact, trace the specific MIL wire back to the ECM. Repair any breaks in the wire using proper automotive splicing techniques (solder and heat shrink).

  6. Reassemble and Test

    Reconnect the instrument cluster and the battery. Turn the key to the ON position to verify the MIL lamp now illuminates during the self-test.

  7. Clear Codes

    Connect a diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool or Bosch ESI[truck]) to clear the inactive 19138 fault code from the ECM memory.
