Case IH 19146 – DCU (Dosing Control Unit): Dosing Valve (electrical) | short circuit to ground | P2048 Reductant Injector - circuit low.
Issue description
The system has detected a low voltage condition, specifically a short circuit to ground, in the electrical circuit of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) dosing valve (also known as the reductant injector). This means the electrical signal meant to operate the DEF injector is grounding out before completing its circuit, preventing the valve from opening and dosing DEF into the exhaust stream.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the DCU to the DEF dosing valve for chafed wires, melted insulation from exhaust heat, or pinched lines that could cause a short to ground.
Disconnect the electrical connector at the DEF dosing valve and check for water intrusion, DEF crystallization, or corroded pins.
Using a multimeter, test the resistance across the pins on the DEF dosing valve itself. If the resistance is near zero, the valve has failed internally (shorted).
With the valve unplugged, turn the key ON and check the harness side for a short to ground using a multimeter. If the short is present while unplugged, the wiring harness is the culprit.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Dosing Valve
Locate the DEF dosing valve, which is mounted directly on the exhaust pipe/SCR catalyst assembly.
Address Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic tests revealed a harness short, trace the wire back to the DCU. Repair the damaged section of the wire using heat-shrink butt connectors and re-loom the harness, ensuring it is routed away from extreme exhaust heat.
Replace the Dosing Valve (If Applicable)
Disconnect the electrical connector and the DEF fluid supply line from the injector. (Caution: DEF fluid may leak; clean up any spills immediately as it is corrosive). Remove the mounting bolts/clamp securing the dosing valve to the exhaust stream. Remove the old valve and clean the mounting port on the exhaust pipe to ensure a good seal. Install the new DEF dosing valve with a new gasket/seal. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the DEF supply line and the electrical connector.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery. Use an electronic service tool to clear the 19146 / P2048 fault code. Run the engine up to operating temperature or initiate a manual DEF system test/regeneration to verify the injector is dosing correctly and the code does not return.
