Case IH 19158 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Aftertreatment Control Module (ACM): DEF/AdBlue quality sensor internal failure (Short circuit to ground error)
Issue description
The DEF quality sensor has an internal failure or short circuit to ground, meaning the signal voltage from the sensor to the control module has dropped to zero or below the minimum acceptable threshold. This typically indicates a chafed signal wire touching chassis ground or a hard internal electrical failure.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the DEF header on top of the tank for chafed wires, bent pins, corrosion, or water ingress.
Use a digital multimeter to test the signal wire between the DEF sensor connector and the ACM/ECM for continuity to ground. If continuity exists, repair the harness.
Use a DEF refractometer to verify the fluid is at the correct 32.5% urea concentration, as severely degraded fluid can sometimes cause erratic sensor behavior.
Reset the quality test timer by draining the DEF with the key ON and engine OFF, turning off the key, refilling with fresh DEF, and clearing the code. If it returns immediately, the sensor has a hard internal fault.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Drain the Tank
Drain the DEF tank or siphon enough fluid so the level is below the header mounting point to prevent spills.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the top of the DEF tank to prevent dirt or debris from falling into the tank when the header is removed.
Disconnect Lines
Disconnect the electrical connector from the DEF header. Disconnect the DEF suction/return lines and the coolant heating lines (if equipped). Be prepared with rags to catch minor spills.
Remove the Header
Unscrew the retaining ring or mounting bolts securing the DEF header to the tank. Carefully pull the old DEF header/sensor assembly out of the tank.
Install the New Part
Insert the new DEF header assembly, ensuring the O-ring/gasket is properly seated to prevent leaks.
Reassembly
Tighten the retaining ring or bolts. Reconnect the DEF lines, coolant lines, and the electrical connector.
Refill and Test
Refill the tank with fresh, high-quality DEF. Reconnect the battery, use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the fault codes, and run the engine on high idle for a few minutes to verify the repair.
