Case IH 19160 (DTC 254E) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): DEF/AdBlue quality sensor internal failure (Concentration value is lower than expected)

Issue description

The DEF quality sensor is reading a fluid concentration that is too low (e.g., the DEF is diluted with water or degraded) or the sensor itself has suffered an internal failure, such as circuit board corrosion from ammonia gas or sensor drift over time.

Check the cause

  1. Test the DEF fluid with a refractometer to ensure it reads exactly 32.5% urea (rules out diluted, contaminated, or degraded fluid).

  2. Inspect the electrical connector and wiring harness at the DEF quality sensor for corroded pins, loose connections, or wire chafing that could disrupt CAN bus communication.

  3. Check the face of the sensor for contamination or crystallized urea causing false readings.

  4. Consult a dealer to check for available ECU software updates that adjust sensor parameters or bypass faulty sensor logic.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the machine, disconnect the battery, and thoroughly clean the area around the top and bottom of the DEF tank to prevent dirt from falling into the system.

  2. Drain the Tank

    Drain the DEF tank into a clean container (if the fluid tested good) or dispose of it if contaminated.

  3. Disconnect Lines

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the DEF quality sensor/header unit. Disconnect the DEF suction and return hoses (be prepared for minor fluid spillage).

  4. Remove the Sensor/Header

    Unbolt the retaining ring or mounting bolts holding the DEF header/sensor assembly to the tank. Carefully lift the unit out of the tank.

  5. Clean the Flange

    Wipe the mounting flange on the tank with a clean, damp, lint-free cloth to ensure a perfect seal for the new O-ring/gasket.

  6. Install the New Part

    Insert the new DEF quality sensor or header unit into the tank. Secure the mounting bolts/ring to the manufacturer's torque specifications.

  7. Reconnect

    Reattach the DEF fluid lines and plug in the electrical connector.

  8. Refill

    Fill the tank with fresh, known-good DEF (32.5% urea).

  9. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the AFS Pro display or an electronic service tool (EST) to clear the stored fault codes.

  10. Test Run

    Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature to verify the SCR system is functioning normally and the code does not return.
