Case IH 19161 – Engine Control Module (ECM): DEF/AdBlue quality sensor internal failure (Internal fault)

Issue description

The sensor responsible for measuring the urea concentration and overall fluid quality inside the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank has suffered an internal malfunction. This is frequently caused by ammonia gas from the DEF fluid permeating the sensor housing and corroding the internal circuit board, or by natural sensor drift over time.

Check the cause

  1. Test the DEF fluid with a refractometer to verify it is at the required 32.5% urea concentration and has not been contaminated with water, diesel, or off-spec fluid.

  2. Inspect the electrical connector at the DEF header unit (on top of the DEF tank) for bent pins, moisture, or ammonia corrosion traveling up the pins.

  3. Check with a Case IH dealer to see if an ECM software update is available for your specific model, as a software flash may permanently resolve the issue by bypassing the sensor requirement.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Clean the Area

    Locate the DEF header unit on the top of the DEF tank. Thoroughly clean the top of the tank and the area around the sensor flange to prevent dirt or debris from falling into the tank during removal.

  3. Disconnect Lines

    Carefully unplug the electrical harness connector from the DEF quality sensor. Disconnect the DEF supply and return hoses (and coolant heater lines, if equipped on your specific tank architecture).

  4. Remove the Sensor Unit

    Unbolt the retaining ring or mounting bolts securing the DEF header assembly to the tank. Carefully pull the entire header/sensor unit straight up and out of the tank.

  5. Drain/Flush

    If there is any suspicion of fluid contamination or crystallization at the bottom of the tank, drain the tank and flush it with distilled water before installing the new sensor.

  6. Install the New Sensor

    Insert the new DEF quality sensor/header unit into the tank, ensuring the rubber gasket/O-ring is properly seated. Tighten the retaining ring or bolts to OEM torque specs.

  7. Reconnect

    Reattach the DEF fluid lines, coolant lines, and the electrical harness connector.

  8. Refill and Clear Codes

    Refill the tank with fresh, high-quality DEF. Reconnect the battery, connect a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 19161 / 464E fault codes, and run the machine to verify the repair.
