Case IH 1917 – VCM (Vehicle Control Module) / UCM (Universal Control Module): VCM - Rail 12VU2 - Park Brake Solenoid Input Power Off

Issue description

The control module has detected a loss of voltage or an open circuit on the specific power rail (12VU2) responsible for supplying or monitoring the park brake solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Check the main power distribution box for blown fuses or faulty relays that supply power to the VCM/UCM, specifically those labeled for the parking brake or auxiliary hydraulics.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness running from the VCM to the park brake solenoid for chafed wires, pinch points, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground or an open circuit.

  3. Disconnect the VCM/UCM connectors and the park brake solenoid connector. Inspect for water intrusion, green copper corrosion, or backed-out pins on the 12VU2 circuit.

  4. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins of the park brake solenoid coil. An out-of-spec reading indicates a failed solenoid coil.

  5. With the key ON and the park brake commanded to release, check for 12V at the solenoid connector to determine if the VCM is successfully outputting power.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken or shorted wire in the 12VU2 circuit, cut out the damaged section and solder/heat-shrink a new wire segment.

  3. Replace the Solenoid

    If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test: Clean the area around the park brake solenoid to prevent debris from entering the hydraulic/brake housing. Disconnect the electrical plug. Remove the retaining nut or bolts holding the solenoid valve in place. Extract the old solenoid and replace the O-rings on the valve stem (lubricate them with clean hydraulic fluid). Slide the new solenoid coil into place and torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.

  4. Module Replacement

    If the wiring and solenoid are perfectly intact but the VCM/UCM is internally failing to power the 12VU2 rail, the VCM must be replaced and flashed/programmed by a dealer.

  5. Reassembly and Testing

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic service tool to clear the inactive 1917 fault code. Cycle the parking brake switch multiple times to ensure the brake physically engages/disengages and the code does not return.
