Case IH 19176 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Aftertreatment Control Module (ACM) / Dosing Control Unit (DCU): DEF/AdBlue tank level sensor indicates too low fill level

This code triggers when the system detects that the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) level has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold, or if the sensor itself is providing an erroneously low reading due to a malfunction.

   Manually verify the actual DEF level in the tank to confirm if it is genuinely empty.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the DEF tank level sensor for chafing, corrosion, or rodent damage.

   Scan for associated J1939 SPN codes (such as SPN 1761, 3031, 3364, or 3515) that might indicate an electrical fault rather than a fluid level issue.

   Ensure the DEF fluid is not degraded, crystallized, or contaminated, which can foul the sensor float or ultrasonic reader.

   Refill the Tank

   If the tank is empty, fill it with fresh, API-certified DEF fluid. Turn the key to the ON position and wait to see if the gauge registers the new fluid level.

   Clean the Sensor/Filter

   If the tank is full but the code persists, drain the DEF tank and remove the DEF level sensor/header unit from the top of the tank. Inspect the suction filter at the bottom of the sensor unit for crystallization or blockage. Replace the filter if necessary.

   Test the Wiring

   Use a multimeter to check for proper reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector based on the specific machine's wiring diagram.

   Replace the Sensor Unit

   If the wiring is intact and the sensor fails to read the fluid level, the DEF tank level sensor (often sold as a complete DEF header assembly) has failed internally and must be replaced.

   Clear Codes

   Reinstall the components, refill the tank, and use an electronic service tool (EST) to clear the fault codes and reset the aftertreatment system.
