Case IH 19211 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Lambda value is greater than NOx monitoring hard threshold of lambda value.

Issue description

The exhaust oxygen (Lambda) reading monitored by the smart NOx sensor is registering a value that exceeds the maximum allowable hard threshold. This typically points to an excessively lean exhaust condition, a calibration drift in the sensor, or a failure of the Lambda/O2 sensing element integrated into the NOx sensor assembly.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the exhaust system upstream of the NOx sensor for any exhaust leaks, which can introduce excess oxygen and skew the Lambda reading.

  2. Inspect the NOx sensor wiring harness for chafing, melting, or damage. Check the connector housing for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins.

  3. Remove the NOx sensor and inspect the probe for heavy soot build-up or moisture contamination that could smother the sensing element.

  4. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and monitor live data for the NOx sensor. Check if the reading is frozen, erratic, or deviates significantly from expected values.

  5. Look for other active codes related to DEF dosing, intake air leaks, or turbocharger issues that could physically cause a lean condition.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare the Machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the exhaust system to cool completely to avoid burns.

  2. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic check revealed damaged wiring on the machine side, repair it using OEM-approved splice connectors. If the connector housing is damaged, replace it using a connector pigtail kit. Do not use generic butt connectors in the high-vibration exhaust area.

  3. Remove the Faulty Sensor

    Disconnect the NOx sensor from the wiring harness. Apply penetrating oil to the sensor bung on the exhaust pipe if it is seized. Use a 22 mm sensor socket to carefully remove the sensor. Avoid using excessive force to prevent stripping the exhaust bung threads.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new NOx sensor into the exhaust bung by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the OEM torque specification using the 22 mm socket.

  5. Reconnect Wiring

    Plug the new sensor into the machine's wiring harness, ensuring the connector clicks and locks securely. Route the wire away from extreme heat sources.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Connect the Case IH EST diagnostic tool, clear the 19211 fault code, and reset any associated aftertreatment counters. Start the engine and perform a test drive or forced regeneration cycle to verify that the SCR system is functioning correctly and the code does not return.
