19214

Case IH 19214 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Engine brake active while vehicle stands still

Issue description

Triggers when the engine control system detects that the engine brake (exhaust flap/retarder) is engaged or being commanded to engage while the vehicle speed is zero.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Magnum

Check the cause

  1. Check the stalk switch / engine brake switch for plausibility

  2. Inspect the wiring harness of the stalk switch for shorts to ground, shorts to power, or open circuits

  3. Check the exhaust flap solenoid to ensure it is not mechanically stuck closed or electrically shorted

  4. Verify vehicle speed data over the CAN bus to ensure the ECM is receiving accurate speed readings (a faulty speed sensor reading '0' while moving could falsely trigger this code)

Repair steps

  1. Verify fault code

Connect the electronic diagnostic tool to the tractor's diagnostic port and verify if code 19214 is active or stored.

  2. Inspect wiring harness

Access the steering column and visually inspect the wiring harness leading from the stalk switch (engine brake/cruise control switch) to the main harness. Look for chafed wires.

  3. Test stalk switch

Use a multimeter to test the stalk switch for proper continuity when engaged and disengaged. If the switch reads as 'closed' (active) without being pressed, the switch has failed internally.

  4. Locate exhaust flap solenoid

If the switch and wiring test good, locate the exhaust flap solenoid valve on the exhaust system.

  5. Test exhaust flap solenoid

Disconnect the solenoid and test for a short circuit. Check if the mechanical flap is seized due to carbon buildup.

  6. Replace defective components

Replace the defective stalk switch or exhaust flap solenoid as required.

  7. Clear codes and test

Clear the fault codes via the diagnostic tool and test the machine to ensure the engine brake only activates when the vehicle is in motion.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Engine Brake Switch / Stalk Switch

Located on the steering column; controls cruise and engine braking.

  • Exhaust Flap Valve / Engine Brake Solenoid

Mounted on the exhaust pipe/manifold to restrict exhaust flow when braking is commanded.
