Case IH 19224 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): eVGT displacement offset Min error

Issue description

The Electronic Variable Geometry Turbocharger (eVGT) actuator is failing to reach its commanded minimum position, or the position sensor is reporting a displacement value that falls below the acceptable minimum offset. This condition is typically caused by a physical blockage in the turbocharger linkage, a failing actuator motor/sensor, or a wiring/power supply issue preventing the actuator from moving correctly.

Check the cause

  1. Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify that fault code 19224 is present and active.

  2. Check the dedicated fuse for the eVGT actuator circuit (often a 20A mini fuse on the F-203 circuit) to ensure it is not blown.

  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect the engine harness from the eVGT actuator, turn the ignition ON, and use a multi-meter to check for proper voltage from the vehicle engine harness side of the eVGT actuator connector (e.g., pin 4) to the chassis ground.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness between the ECU and the actuator for open circuits, short circuits, or damaged pins. Check for CAN timeout or data length errors.

  5. Physically inspect the eVGT linkage to check if it is disconnected, damaged, sticking, or blocked by debris/soot buildup inside the turbocharger wastegate/vanes.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Fuse Replacement

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a blown 20A eVGT fuse, replace it. Reconnect power and test to see if the code clears. If it blows again, trace the harness for a short to ground.

  3. Wiring Repair

    If harness damage is found between the ECU and the actuator, repair or replace the affected wiring sections and connectors.

  4. Free the Linkage

    If the eVGT linkage is physically binding, attempt to clean and lubricate the external linkage. If the internal turbocharger vanes are seized due to heavy soot or mechanical failure, the turbocharger assembly itself will need to be removed and cleaned or replaced.

  5. Replace the Actuator

    If the wiring is intact, the fuse is good, and the mechanical linkage moves freely, the eVGT actuator has suffered an internal electrical or motor failure. Unbolt the actuator from the turbocharger and install a new unit.

  6. Initialization / Learn Procedure

    Reconnect the battery. Connect the EST and clear the fault codes. You must run the eVGT initialization/learn procedure via the EST so the ECU can learn the new minimum and maximum displacement offsets of the replacement actuator.
