Case IH 19229 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Open load of powerstage of Charge Air Cooling Bypass Valve

Issue description

This code indicates an open circuit in the powerstage (driver circuit) that controls the Charge Air Cooling (CAC) Bypass Valve. The engine control system has detected that the electrical circuit to the valve is incomplete, typically meaning a disconnected plug, a broken wire in the harness, or an internally open solenoid coil inside the valve.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Case N-Series Tractor Loader Backhoes
  • 580N
  • 580SN
  • 590SN

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Charge Air Cooling Bypass Valve for chafed wires, rodent damage, or a disconnected plug

  2. Disconnect the plug at the valve and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the terminals of the CAC Bypass Valve solenoid (an infinite/OL reading means the internal coil is open)

  4. Check the continuity of the signal and ground wires from the valve connector back to the ECM pins to ensure there are no breaks in the wiring

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Valve

Locate the Charge Air Cooling Bypass Valve, which is typically mounted near the intake manifold or along the charge air cooler piping.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the valve.

  4. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire, splice and seal the wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors.

  5. Valve Replacement

If the valve is faulty, remove the mounting bolts or clamps securing the bypass valve to the charge air piping. Remove the faulty valve and clean the mating surfaces. Install the new valve with new gaskets/seals to prevent boost leaks. Torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical connector to the valve.

  7. Test

Reconnect the battery. Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the 19229 fault code. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return under load.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Charge Air Cooling (CAC) Bypass Valve / EGR Cooler Bypass Valve

Must be matched to the specific FPT Tier 4 Final engine serial number.

  • Mounting gaskets or O-rings

Always replace the associated mounting gaskets or O-rings when replacing the valve to prevent charge air (boost) leaks.
