Case IH 19230 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Over temperature of powerstage of Charge Air Cooling Bypass Valve

Issue description

The internal driver circuit within the control module that supplies electrical current to the Charge Air Cooling (CAC) Bypass Valve actuator is overheating. This is almost always caused by excessive current draw on the circuit, which typically stems from a short circuit in the wiring harness, a shorted internal coil within the bypass valve itself, or a failing control module.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the ECM/VCM to the Charge Air Cooling Bypass Valve for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the CAC Bypass Valve and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the Charge Air Cooling Bypass Valve actuator coil (a reading near zero indicates an internal short).

  4. With the battery disconnected and both the ECM and valve unplugged, test the signal and ground wires for continuity to ground to verify if the harness is shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to protect the ECM from further electrical spikes.

  2. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the harness continuity test revealed a short, trace the harness back to the ECM. Splice and repair the damaged section of the wire using heat-shrink connectors, or replace the engine harness section if the damage is extensive.

  3. Replace the Valve (If Applicable)

    If the CAC Bypass Valve failed the resistance test, unbolt the valve from the charge air cooler/intake plumbing. Clean the mating surface, install the new valve with a new gasket/O-ring, and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  4. Reconnect and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the wiring harness to the valve and the ECM. Reconnect the battery. Use a CNH EASy diagnostic tool (or equivalent heavy-duty scanner) to clear the inactive 19230 fault code.

  5. Test Run

    Start the engine and bring it up to operating temperature. Monitor the ECM to ensure the fault code does not return and that the bypass valve operates smoothly without triggering a derate. (Note: If the code immediately returns after verifying the wiring and valve are perfect, the ECM's internal powerstage is likely permanently burned out and the ECM will require replacement).
