Case IH 19231 – VCM (Vehicle Control Module) / Engine Control Module: Short circuit to battery of powerstage of Charge Air Cooling Bypass Valve

Issue description

The engine's control module has detected that the driver circuit (powerstage) responsible for operating the Charge Air Cooling Bypass Valve is receiving unintended battery voltage. This typically points to a wiring harness short, a failed connector, or an internal short within the valve's electrical actuator itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the VCM/ECU to the Charge Air Cooling Bypass Valve for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points that could cause a short to battery voltage.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the Charge Air Cooling Bypass Valve and the ECU to inspect for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the circuits.

  3. With the battery disconnected, use a multimeter to check for continuity between the valve's power supply wire and the main battery power lines.

  4. Test the resistance of the Charge Air Cooling Bypass Valve itself to determine if the internal solenoid/actuator is internally shorted to its own power supply.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Always disconnect the machine's battery via the master disconnect switch or battery terminals before performing electrical repairs to prevent ECU damage.

  2. Isolate the Short

    Based on the multimeter tests, isolate whether the short is in the wiring harness or the valve.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the harness is damaged, splice and heat-shrink the affected wires, or replace that section of the engine harness. Route the harness away from high-heat areas (like the exhaust/DOC system) to prevent future melting.

  4. Replace the Valve

    If the valve is internally shorted, unbolt the Charge Air Cooling Bypass Valve from the charge air piping. Clean the mating surfaces, install the new valve with a new gasket/seal, and torque to OEM specifications.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery. Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the inactive 19231 fault code.

  6. Test Run

    Start the engine and bring it up to operating temperature to ensure the VCM commands the bypass valve without triggering a new fault.
