Case IH 19233 – VCM or EDC/ECM: Difference between measured and calculated temperature
Issue description
The engine's control module is detecting a discrepancy in the Charge Air Cooling (CAC) system. The computer calculates an expected charge air temperature based on current operating conditions (ambient temperature, turbocharger boost pressure, and engine load). If the actual temperature measured by the downstream charge air temperature sensor or intake manifold temperature sensor deviates significantly from this mathematical model, the system logs this fault. It typically indicates poor charge air cooler efficiency, a boost leak, or a skewed temperature sensor.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the front of the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) and radiator for blockages from chaff, dirt, or debris that could reduce cooling efficiency
Perform a cold start sensor verification using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to ensure the charge air downstream temperature sensor and intake manifold temperature sensor match ambient air temperature after sitting overnight
Inspect all hoses, pipes, and clamps between the turbocharger, the charge air cooler, and the intake manifold for splits, rub-throughs, or loose connections that could cause a boost leak
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the charge air temperature sensors for chafing, and check the connectors for water intrusion or corrosion
Repair steps
Clean the Cooling Package
If the CAC is plugged with debris, use compressed air or low-pressure water to thoroughly blow out the cooling fins. Ensure airflow is fully restored through the heat exchangers.
Repair Boost Leaks
If any charge air hoses are degraded or clamps are loose, remove the damaged hoses, clean the mounting surfaces, install new hoses, and torque the heavy-duty T-bolt clamps to specification.
Replace Faulty Sensors
If the diagnostic tool revealed a skewed temperature sensor reading, disconnect the sensor harness, unthread the faulty sensor from the intake manifold or charge air piping, and install a new OEM sensor.
Clear and Test
Reconnect all components. Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool, clear the 19233 fault code, and run the machine under a heavy working load to verify that the measured temperature now aligns with the ECU's calculated temperature model.
