Case IH 19234 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): High pressure intercooler outlet temperature is too high.

Issue description

The engine control system has detected that the temperature of the charge air exiting the high-pressure intercooler has exceeded the maximum allowable threshold, indicating a loss of cooling efficiency, restricted airflow, a failing cooling fan, or a faulty temperature sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the exterior of the intercooler and radiator for blockages caused by dirt, chaff, or debris (restricted airflow is the most common cause).

  2. Verify that the viscous drive or variable-pitch engine cooling fan is engaging properly when engine temperatures rise.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the intercooler outlet temperature sensor for chafing, corrosion, or short circuits.

  4. Using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), check the live data for the intercooler outlet temperature when the engine is completely cold. It should match ambient air temperature; if it reads artificially high, the sensor is faulty.

  5. Check the charge air piping for internal blockages or collapsed hoses under boost.

Repair steps

  1. Clean the Cooling Package

    Even if the sensor is faulty, thoroughly blow out the radiator, intercooler, and oil cooler fins with compressed air to ensure baseline cooling efficiency.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the air-to-air temperature sensor on the intake piping just after the intercooler outlet (before the intake manifold).

  3. Disconnect the Harness

    Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Unthread the faulty sensor from the charge air pipe/manifold.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM sensor into the port. Torque to the manufacturer's specification (do not over-tighten).

  6. Reconnect and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the wiring harness. Turn the key on and use the CNH EST to clear the inactive fault codes.

  7. Test Run

    Run the machine under a heavy load to ensure the intercooler outlet temperature remains within the normal operating range and the code does not return.
