Case IH 19241 – Engine Control Module (EDC / Engine ECU): High pressure intercooler outlet temperature sensor voltage is lower than expected.

Issue description

This code indicates that the signal voltage returning from the charge air/intercooler temperature sensor to the control module has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold (typically corresponding to an FMI 4 error: Voltage Below Normal / Shorted to Low Source). This usually means there is a short to ground in the sensor's signal wire, a loss of the 5V reference power supply, or the sensor itself has failed internally (shorted).

  • Case IH Steiger Series Tractors (Tier 4 engine models)
  • Other Case IH machines equipped with FPT Cursor 9, Cursor 13, or NEF engines featuring a high-pressure intercooler/charge air cooler (CAC)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading from the Engine ECU to the intercooler outlet temperature sensor for chafed wires, melted insulation, or tight bends that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins on both the sensor and the harness side for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.

  3. With the sensor unplugged (Key On, Engine Off), use a multimeter to check the reference voltage at the harness connector. You should see a steady +5V reference signal from the ECU. If 0V, the wire is broken or shorted to ground.

  4. Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the sensor's pins. If the resistance reads near zero (continuity), the sensor is internally shorted and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the engine to cool completely. The intercooler piping and surrounding exhaust/turbo components get extremely hot during operation.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the high-pressure intercooler outlet temperature sensor. It is threaded into the charge air cooler (CAC) outlet piping or directly on the intake manifold.

  3. Removal

    Depress the locking tab and disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor. Using a deep socket or wrench, carefully unthread the sensor from the intercooler pipe.

  4. Inspection

    Inspect the mounting port for heavy carbon buildup or oil residue. Clean the port threads gently if necessary.

  5. Installation

    Thread the new sensor into the port by hand to prevent cross-threading. Torque the sensor to OEM specifications (FPT air/temperature sensors are typically torqued to 15–20 Nm / 11–15 lb-ft). Do not overtighten, as the brass/plastic housings can break.

  6. Reconnection & Clearing

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring it clicks into place. Turn the battery disconnect switch back on, turn the key to the ON position, and use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the in-cab diagnostic display to clear the inactive 19241 fault code.
