Case IH 19242 – Engine ECU: Crankcase pressure high, eventually blow-by filter or blow-by line clogged
Issue description
The engine control unit has detected that the crankcase pressure signal is out of range and has exceeded the upper threshold limit. This increased pressure is typically caused by a continuously clogged blow-by filter (crankcase ventilation filter) or an obstruction in the blow-by recirculation tubes. If left unaddressed, high crankcase pressure can damage the engine and negatively affect steering pump operation.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- Tier 4b
- Case IH tractors
- Case IH telehandlers
Check the cause
Verify Active Code: Confirm the fault code is present and active in the ECU.
Sensor & Wiring Check: Check the crankcase pressure sensor and its wiring harness for faults, shorts, or damage, as a faulty sensor can falsely report high pressure.
Visual Inspection of Lines: Inspect the blow-by recirculation tubes and hoses for kinks, physical obstructions, or heavy oil condensate buildup.
Pressure Test (Optional): If needed, adapt a water manometer to the crankcase ventilation system (by removing the crankcase ventilation tube from the air intake tube and capping the port) to manually verify the crankcase pressure.
Repair steps
Locate the Blow-By Filter Housing
Identify the crankcase breather/blow-by filter assembly on the engine block.
Disconnect Lines
Carefully remove the crankcase ventilation tube from the air intake tube. Cap the port on the air intake tube temporarily to prevent dirt ingress.
Remove the Old Filter
Open the blow-by filter housing and remove the clogged filter(s) and old gasket.
Clean the System
Clean out any oil condensate or sludge from the housing and ensure the blow-by return lines to the engine are completely clear of obstructions.
Install New Parts
Install the new blow-by filter set and the new gasket. (Note: OEM documentation recommends replacing the blow-by filters with every standard engine oil change to prevent this code).
Reassemble and Clear
Reconnect all ventilation tubes securely. Cycle the controller power and use an Electronic Service Tool to clear the fault code from the Engine ECU.
