Case IH 19253 (F-4354-03) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Aftertreatment System ECU: DEF Pressure Line Heater Driver Circuit Short to Battery or Open Circuit

The Heater Control Unit (HCU) has detected a short circuit to the battery (High Source) or an open circuit on the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) pressure line heater driver circuit. A short circuit to battery means the control circuit is receiving voltage when it shouldn't be, typically due to a wiring harness fault connecting the power stage directly to a voltage source, or an internal failure in the heater element or relay.

   Inspect the battery fuse (often a 175A fuse on the positive post) and the specific fuses powering the HCU and DEF system

2. 2

   Test the hose heaters main relay and the specific pressure heated line relay for internal shorts

3. 3

   Check the wiring harness for damage, proper routing, and chafing against the chassis

4. 4

   Inspect connector terminals at the HCU and the DEF pressure line for debris, water intrusion, or corrosion

   Check for any damaged or loose machine grounds (earths)

   Use a breakout harness (such as the 18-047-01 DEF Pressure Line Heater Breakout Harness) to safely test the circuits for continuity and voltage

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the batteries. Never disconnect batteries while the engine is running.

   Isolate the Circuit

   Locate the Heater Control Unit (HCU) and trace the wiring to the DEF pressure line. Disconnect the electrical connector at the DEF pressure line heater.

   Test for Short to Battery

   Reconnect the batteries and turn the key to the ON position (engine OFF). Using a multimeter, probe the control circuit pins on the harness side. If battery voltage is present where it shouldn't be, the harness is shorted to a power wire.

   Repair Harness

   If a short is found in the harness, trace the wiring back to the HCU, locate the chafed/melted section, and repair or replace the damaged wiring.

   Test the Heater Element

   If the harness tests good, measure the resistance of the DEF pressure line heater element itself. If the element is internally shorted, the entire DEF pressure line must be replaced.

   Test the HCU

   If the harness, relays, and heater line all test within specification, the fault likely lies within the HCU power stage itself, requiring replacement of the Heater Control Unit.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect all components, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and run the engine to verify the repair.
