Case IH 19263 – DCU: Tank heating Valve | Short circuit to ground | P20B3 Reagent - tank heating valve - short circuit low.

Issue description

The system has detected a short circuit to ground (low voltage) in the electrical circuit for the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid / Reagent) tank heating valve. This valve is a directional control valve that regulates the flow of hot engine coolant to the DEF tank to prevent the fluid from freezing in cold weather.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the DCU to the DEF tank heating valve for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or exposed copper touching the chassis (short to ground).

  2. Inspect the electrical connector at the heating valve for corrosion, bent pins, or water intrusion.

  3. Test the electrical resistance of the heating valve solenoid to check for an internal short inside the electromagnet.

  4. Ensure the heating valve is operating normally mechanically and is not stuck open.

  5. Verify DEF tank coolant hose routing (especially on Fargo-built tractors): the DEF heater line with the 'red' band must connect to the top tube running to the front part of the engine head.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the DEF tank heater control valve, typically found inline with the coolant hoses routing to the DEF tank assembly.

  3. Isolate Coolant

    Drain the engine coolant below the level of the valve, or use hose pinch-off pliers on the coolant lines on both sides of the valve to prevent coolant loss.

  4. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the heating valve.

  5. Remove Valve

    Loosen the hose clamps, pull the coolant lines off the valve nipples, and remove any mounting bracket hardware holding the valve in place.

  6. Install New Valve

    Install the replacement valve. Note: This is a directional valve controlled by the ECM. Ensure the flow arrow points in the correct direction so the valve can properly cut off coolant flow.

  7. Reassemble

    Reattach the coolant hoses and tighten the hose clamps. Reinstall the mounting hardware and plug in the electrical connector.

  8. Refill and Clear

    Remove the hose pinch pliers (or refill the engine coolant). Reconnect the battery.

  9. Test

    Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 19263 / P20B3 fault code from the DCU. Run the machine to operating temperature and check for coolant leaks and ensure the code does not return.
