19268

Case IH 19268 – Engine Control Module (ECM / Engine ECU): Engine shutdown commanded to protect the engine.

Issue description

This is a secondary, reactionary fault code. It indicates that the Engine Control Module has detected a critical operating condition that could cause catastrophic engine damage and has automatically forced the engine to shut down as a protective measure.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Case IH N-Series Loaders / TLBs
  • Case IH Magnum
  • Case IH Steiger
  • Case IH Puma
  • Case IH Maxxum

Check the cause

  1. Check engine oil, engine coolant, and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) levels.

  2. Inspect the engine bay for catastrophic leaks such as blown coolant hoses, ruptured oil lines, or severe oil pan leaks.

  3. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and pull all active and stored fault codes to find the primary code (e.g., 19266, 19260, 19267).

  4. Check the wiring harnesses and connectors for the Engine Oil Pressure Sensor and Coolant Temperature Sensor for false readings.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Plug the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) into the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Identify Root Cause

Review the fault log to identify the primary fault (e.g., Coolant Temperature Sensor circuit high/low, or Oil Pressure low).

  3. Perform Primary Repair

Troubleshoot and repair the primary fault. For example, if the coolant temperature sensor failed, drain the coolant below the sensor port, remove the faulty sensor, install the new OEM sensor, and refill the coolant.

  4. Top Off Fluids

Ensure all engine fluids are restored to their proper operating levels.

  5. Clear Codes

Use the EST to clear the inactive 19268 code and the primary fault code from the Engine ECU.

  6. Test Run

Start the engine and monitor live data parameters (oil pressure, coolant temp) to ensure they remain in the safe operating range and the shutdown does not reoccur.
