Case IH 19280 – DeNox / Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Control Module: Filterbox heater - short circuit to battery

This code indicates a malfunction in the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) / Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system. Specifically, the control module has detected that the electrical circuit for the DEF filter box heater is shorted to a power source (battery voltage). The filter box heater is designed to prevent the DEF/AdBlue fluid from freezing in cold temperatures.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the SCR control module to the DEF filter box heater for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinched harnesses.

   Disconnect the electrical connector at the filter box heater, turn the key ON, and check active fault codes. If the code changes to 19283 (open circuit), the heater element is internally shorted.

   With the heater disconnected and the key ON, use a multimeter to probe the signal/ground wire on the harness side. A 12V reading indicates a short to battery in the harness.

   Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the filter box heater element. An extremely low or zero reading indicates an internal short circuit.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the DEF Filter Box

   Locate the DEF supply module/filter box assembly (typically mounted near the bottom of the DEF tank).

   Disconnect Wiring

   Unplug the electrical connector specifically routed to the filter box heater/base plate.

   Repair Harness (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a harness short, trace the wire back to the SCR module, locate the damaged section, splice in new wire using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors, and re-loom the harness.

   Replace Heater (If Applicable)

   If the heater element is internally shorted, unbolt the heater base plate from the DEF filter housing. Clean the mating surface, install the new heater/base plate assembly, and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

   Reassemble and Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back into the heater. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

   Clear Codes

   Turn the key ON. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's instrument cluster "H Menu" (Universal Controller - HC - Clear all stored fault codes) to clear the inactive 19280 fault code.
