Case IH 19291 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) / Armrest Controller: Timeout of CAN-Transmit-Frame Cruise Control 3 (CCVS3)

Issue description

Indicates a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication timeout error. The system expected to receive or transmit the CCVS3 data frame within a specific timeframe, but the message was lost, delayed, or the transmitting node dropped off the network.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Case IH Puma
  • Optum

Check the cause

  1. Check the CAN Bus Resistance: With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, one of the terminating resistors is missing, failed, or there is an open circuit in the wiring.

  2. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Check the main CAN bus wiring harness for chafing, cuts, or corrosion, particularly where the harness routes between the cab (armrest controller) and the engine ECM.

  3. Check Terminating Resistors: Locate the CAN bus terminating resistors (often located near the ECM or at the ends of the harness) and verify they are securely plugged in and functioning.

  4. Module Voltage/Ground: Ensure the module responsible for transmitting the CCVS3 frame has proper power and ground. A module with low voltage may drop off the CAN network, triggering a timeout.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the tractor's battery before servicing the electrical system.

  2. Locate damaged wiring

Locate any damaged sections of the CAN bus wiring harness identified during the diagnostic checks.

  3. Repair or replace wiring

Repair the damaged wires using OEM-approved splicing methods, or replace the affected harness section entirely.

  4. Replace terminating resistor

If a terminating resistor tested faulty (open or out of spec), unplug it and install a new 120-ohm terminating resistor.

  5. Reconnect and test

Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), and test-drive the tractor using the cruise control functions to verify the CCVS3 frame is communicating properly.
