Case IH 19292 (F-518654-09) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Engine is not receiving a message from the machine controller - CM1BC message
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is failing to receive the expected CAN-Receive-Frame "CM1BC" data packet from the Body Computer (BC) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM) within the required timeframe, indicating a CAN Bus communication timeout error.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Farmall Tractors (Models 40, 45, 50, 55-120C, and 115U)
- T7 Series (Tier 4B)
- Magnum & Steiger Series
- Axial-Flow Combines (7230, 8230, and 9230 series)
- Machines operating on the MTA CCM & APH STAGE V MR On-Board Diagnostics architecture
Check the cause
Verify the presence and correct connection of the Body Computer / VCM to the vehicle's CAN network
Check the CAN bus wiring harness between the Body Computer and the ECU for disconnected cables, broken wires, or short circuits
Verify the correct functioning of the CAN controller within the Body Computer
Check the CAN timing configuration, hardware compatibility, and verify the network termination resistors are intact
Repair steps
Visual Inspection
Locate the wiring harness connecting the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to the Body Computer (BC). Inspect the entire run for chafing, pinch points, or melted insulation.
Connector Maintenance
Disconnect the harnesses at both the ECU and the Body Computer. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and ensure a tight, secure fit upon reconnection.
Continuity & Short Testing
Using a multimeter, test the CAN High and CAN Low lines between the Body Computer and the ECU for continuity. Test both lines to ensure they are not shorted to ground or shorted to power.
Termination Resistance Test
With the batteries disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN bus network. A healthy CAN network should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, a terminating resistor or module connection is broken.
Module Replacement
If the wiring, connectors, and network resistance all test perfectly, the CAN controller inside the Body Computer or the ECU has likely failed internally. The defective module will need to be replaced and programmed by a dealer.
