Case IH 19292 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Timeout Error of CAN-Receive-Frame CM1BC

Issue description

The engine is not receiving the expected "CM1BC" communication message from the machine controller (Body Computer / Vehicle Control Module) over the CAN bus network. This indicates a loss of communication or a physical break in the CAN network between these two critical modules.

Check the cause

  1. Check battery voltage — CNH EDC systems will often disable power stage diagnosis if battery voltage is too high or too low, causing CAN dropouts.

  2. Perform a CAN bus resistance test with the battery disconnected. Measure resistance across CAN High and CAN Low pins (should read 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a missing terminating resistor or broken wiring; open indicates a complete break).

  3. Inspect the main communication harness between the Engine ECU and the Body Computer for chafing, corrosion, or loose connector pins.

  4. Check for related CAN timeout codes (e.g., 19293, 19294, 19295, 19296) which would indicate a total network failure rather than an isolated module issue.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing the electrical system.

  2. Inspect Connectors

    Disconnect the harnesses at both the Engine ECU and the Body Computer. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and ensure no pins are pushed back or corroded.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the CAN bus resistance test failed, trace the CAN lines between the ECU and Body Computer. Repair any broken wires or replace the damaged section of the communication harness.

  4. Replace Terminating Resistors

    If a terminating resistor is found to be burnt out or missing (causing a 120-ohm or open reading), plug in a new terminating resistor.

  5. Module Replacement (If Necessary)

    If the wiring harness, power, grounds, and resistors all test perfectly, the fault lies within the transmitting or receiving module. The Body Computer is failing to send the CM1BC frame, or the ECU's CAN transceiver has failed. Replace the faulty module (dealer programming will be required for a new Body Computer or ECU).

  6. Clear and Test

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool (like Jaltest or CNH EST), and cycle the key to verify the CM1BC message is successfully received.
