Case IH 19293 – Vehicle Control Module (VCM) or Engine Control Module (ECM): Timeout Error of CAN-Receive-Frame

Issue description

A communication network error indicating that a control module on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus expected to receive a specific data frame within a programmed time window, but the message never arrived. This typically points to a physical interruption on the CAN bus (wiring issue), severe interference, or a module that has gone offline.

Check the cause

  1. Battery and Charging System Check: Verify the battery voltage is stable (12V-14V). Low or high voltage can cause power stage diagnosis to be disabled, leading to modules dropping offline and triggering CAN timeouts.

  2. CAN Bus Resistance Test: Disconnect the negative battery cable. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance between the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. A reading of 120 ohms indicates an open circuit or a missing/failed terminating resistor.

  3. Visual Harness Inspection: Inspect the main CAN bus wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or rodent damage, particularly where harnesses route near the engine block or articulation points.

  4. Connector and Pin Inspection: Check the connectors at the VCM and ECM. Look for backed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Power

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent short circuits while working on the communication lines.

  2. Clean Connectors

    If moisture or green corrosion is found in the VCM/ECM plugs or intermediate harness connectors, clean the pins thoroughly with electrical contact cleaner. Apply dielectric grease to the connector seals to prevent future moisture ingress.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the CAN High or CAN Low wires are chafed or broken, cut out the damaged section. Splice in new wire using OEM-approved methods (soldering and adhesive-lined heat shrink). You must maintain the standard twist rate of the CAN wires (typically 1 twist per inch) to prevent electromagnetic interference.

  4. Replace Terminating Resistors

    If the CAN bus resistance test yielded 120 ohms, locate and replace the failed CAN terminating resistor on the affected network branch.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible diagnostic scanner (e.g., Jaltest) to the diagnostic port. Clear the inactive 19293 fault code.

  6. Test Operation

    Cycle the ignition key and start the machine. Monitor the live CAN bus data to ensure communication is restored and the timeout error does not return.
