Case IH 19296 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Timeout Error of CAN-Transmit-Frame DLCC1

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU/EDC) is failing to transmit the Direct Lamp Control Command 1 (DLCC1) message to the instrument cluster or body controller over the CAN network, or the message is not being acknowledged within the expected timeframe.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Check the CAN bus wiring harness for physical damage, chafing, or disconnected cables between the Engine Control Unit and the Instrument Cluster.

  2. CAN Bus Resistance Test: Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the battery. Measure the resistance between the CAN High and CAN Low pins on the harness side of the connector. The resistance should be approximately 60 ohms.

  3. Wiggle Test: Wiggle the harness while measuring the resistance to check for intermittent shorts or broken wires.

  4. Controller Check: Check for other CAN bus timeout errors (like DLCC2 or ACK timeouts) which might indicate a broader network failure or a defective CAN controller.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Inspect and Clean Connectors

    Locate the ECM and the Instrument Cluster. Disconnect the main harness connectors. Inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or moisture. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the resistance test (from the diagnostic steps) fails or fluctuates, trace the CAN bus harness to locate the break or short circuit. Repair the damaged section of the wiring or replace the affected harness segment.

  4. Check Terminating Resistors

    If the resistance is 120 ohms, one of the CAN terminating resistors is faulty or unplugged. If it is 0 ohms, there is a dead short between CAN High and CAN Low. Repair or replace the terminating resistor/jumper as needed.

  5. Module Replacement/Reflash

    If the wiring is 100% intact, the connectors are clean, and the resistance is exactly 60 ohms, the CAN controller inside the ECM is likely defective. The ECM will need to be reflashed with updated software or physically replaced.
